Diesel engines

Are there 2 engines, a 2.2 and a 2.5? seen a couple of 2.2's on ebay :-/
If there is which is best?
BHP of each?

2.2 is the vauxhall lump. 2.5  is the straight 6 is bmw derived lump. :)

Guess the 2.5 BMW lump is the best one then.... :)

2.5TD has a "Massive" 96 BHP @ 4,500 RPM.   ::)

Is that all :o, seen them advertised with 128 or therabouts, what is the 2.2, any idea..... :(

X25DT 2.5 TD I6 131 PS (96 kW; 129 hp) 250 N·m (184 lb·ft) MY 1994-2000
Y25DT 2.5 DTI I6 150 PS (110 kW; 148 hp) 300 N·m (221 lb·ft) MY 2001-2003


So these are the ones to look out for, 129 is not much is it, less that a 2.0l petrol, and in auto that is not exactly quick....... :-/

Have a quick look at this quide I produced, got a bit about the 2.2 DTI...

However, I remember one of your stipulations for a new car is that it must be auto. The 2.2 DTI only comes in manual. And the 2.5 TD ceased on a 'Y' plate. You tend to find more pre and mini fl's with the 2.5 really.

The 2.5 DTI, was not available in the UK, so you'll only be looking at the 129bhp TD model.

Why is that then, its only a badge ;)

Stock form, the 2.2 is more powerful, but only available in manual.

The 2.5 is easily chipped back to BMW spec (and beyond), but if you have an auto, you'll need to change the gearbox.  I think the manual box is better suited to this engine though...


Both have their fair share of issues (usually around damage/wear caused by previous, inadequate servicing).

My own personal preference would be for the 2.5TD.  Sadly, Vauxhall did not get the Y25DT engine.
