the coolant loss is more like a ltr per week rather than per day
as suggested by the RAC man i had the timing belt changed to-day the garage said that the eml light was on and that the cleared all the codes took the car for a run and the light came back on, they then said that there was a code showing a fault on number 4 cylinder and that that indicated the head gasket was faulty and further suggested that it might be cheaper to replace the car. as you can guess that has put the wind right up me its only 8 years old with just over 72k on the clock
the garage are going to phone me tomorrow with a price to do the hg including getting the head skimmed
does anyone have any idea how much this is likley to be and does the head really need to be skimmed or is the garage swing the lead
any help would be gratefully received

Where are you? DIY is far better and not too much of a challenge.

Perhaps you should contact one of the guys on here who do work

second that.
mentioned a few times by those in the know on the forum that there are plenty of places for coolant to leak without notice.

just noticed you have the four pot. head skim and pressure test covers all bases.no point in doing the job if the head has a hair line crack.

I think the garage are talking bull poo! Even if it turned out to be the HG, you are only looking at £150 ish to DIY & you don't need to be a mechanic to do it either, just handy with tools, confident and methodical. You will find all the help you need on here too

Maybe they got the code for misfire on no4  :-/

I wouldn't rule out a HG failure, as it's a 4 pot, but not just from a code read

Needs a compression test to confirm

could just be heater by pass valve and a missfire...?

eventually found the hbv which is hidding under the two pipes going to the heater matrix [if someone can tell me how i'll post a photo]anyway all seems dry in that area
ran the car with the header tank cap off upto temp with the heater going full blast no leaks and no air escaping in the tank
quite a big drip of water from the exhaust every 10/secs
light mayo on oil filler cap lots in the breather pipe going to the sump
I think i'll need to bite the bullet and get a pressure test and probably the hg replaced
unless anyone has any other ideas
