troubles
« on: 17 June 2010, 00:30:02 »

Hey Guy, just joined here and would love to find some help for a few troubling points with my car. its an epic story of faults so here i go

I bought this car 2001 Y plate and everything was nearly fine. the only problem i could see was it takes 6 atempts to lock the car with the fob ie i lock it, it unlocks, i lock it etc and the cetral locking dont work if i use the key to lock it.

the next day i had the cam belt and tensioners changed. later in the day a light came on whilst driving saying (according to my handbook) that the emisions was wrong.

the next day it was gone, no lights at all.

the next day i had to drive to brussels and from cardiff - dover (4hrs) not a problem, everything working fine. i drive off the ferry at dunkirk and about 5 mins down the road i put my foot down to overtake a lorry and the car cut out, all lights on and then off and engine dead. it rolled for e few seconds and started as still in gear but my emissions light was on as was my traction control system light and another of which forget. this went on a few times befor cutting out completely. i took a a while to get it going again and when it started the engine electronics light came on and stayed on which the book says i have an electrical fault.

the following day i started the car to drive to work and everything was fine, no lights and car performed normal. about 5 mins down the road it starts happening again. and, again, after 3 - 4 brakedowns, the engine electronics light came on and stayed on and i got to work with the engine limited. before driving home i was advised to dis connect the battery to try and reboot the car. it worked, i drove home, in and home the following day (today). not a problem with the engine at all, but.......... now i have the following problems an i am so confussed.

1. sun roof dont work normal, only in little bursts of movement.

2. the electric window, whilst still working has lost its one touch open and close but all others fine.

3. the drivers map light turns on whilst the engine is on unless i open the door and the curtesy light comes on or pull out the light switch to operate the curtesy light.

this all i noticed so far, any ideas????????

Try changing the battery in the key fob first. Re windows and roof . They need resetting do this by opening the windows one by one then press and hold the close button till the window shuts then keep button pressed you may hear a click you should now have one touch function back . Repeat on rest of windows in turn . Same for roof. Turn switch to each possition and press button in .

1-2 just need to be reset, sunroof, hold button in dont turn it, winds press button up 5 times on each window, 3 somthing is sorting out there maybe behind the light. engine stall, sounds like crank sensor fault, and if you take the battery off wrong you will have lots of faults,has to be taken off the right way and the is a help page on this site.

Firstly have a look through the owners manual here;
http://images.omegaowners.com/documents/UserGuides/OmegaOct2002.pdf
It will tell you how to reset your sunroof and windows (pages 123 &125).
This happens whenever you disconnect the battery and is perfectly normal behaviour.
Your central locking problem sounds like a misbehaving drivers door solenoid which may need a good cleaning and lubricating or can be replaced (PM Darth Loo Knee he breaks omegas and may have one for sale).
The EML will have come on for a reason so you need to read the fault codes and post them up to help diagnose further.
For your car the "Pedal Trick" will flash out the fault codes for you, see here;
http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1189022687

Post up your symptoms and the fault codes you get I'm sure someone will be able to help further then.

DTM's Law: If you get more than one system going down at the same time.....its likely to be electrical with voltage being the key one.

So check the alternator charge voltage and electrical connections and idealy, get the codes for the engine ECU read

Generally that means one of three things;

Either the CAT really is dying, the O2 sensor after the CAT is dying or there's an air leak somwhere..

Basically, an OBD-II ECU compares the readings from the pre-CAT oxygen sensors (in the exhaust manifold) and the post-CAT oxygen sensor and looks for the post-CAT to be cycling between rich & lean much more slowly than the pre-CAT sensor.  If the post-CAT fails to cycle or cycles too fast (unstable reading) or is stuck in one state (rich or lean) you'll throw that error..

would this be the cause of my engine stalling a few times

Hm.. unlikely - certainly on all the other engines I've worked on (I can't speak for OBD-II compliant VX engines) the post-CAT O2 sensor has no role in fuelling, only emissions equipment monitoring (it's a Euro & California emissions thing)

But.. a blocked or badly corroded CAT could cause stalling, but it's a bit of a long shot.

Brussels to Cardiff is a fair run for a long fault code! :) Although based on Toyota ECUs, the post-CAT fault is usually a multi-trip fault.. having said that, I suspect you'll stop for fuel at least once between the two places so that's alright..

Pah, that's normal for the drive by wire engines, they all do it eventually, see maintenance for the guide on moving second lambda post main cat. Early stages if just one bank, to be followed by 0420 and a constant orange light on the dash.

Cutting out, sounds like either crank sensor if it's just stalled, or if the electrics died completely maybe loose battery terminal type fault? Check all electrical connections on battery, alternator, earths etc
