I'm back
« on: 04 July 2010, 13:04:54 »

Hi there guys.  Some of you may remember a while back when i had a 95 td elite.  i bought it off another forum member in good faith, but turned out to be a bucket of shit, knackered fuel injection pump being top of the list of faults.  Was driving it along one day when the revs started to jump until it eventually groud to a halt and started rolling backwards down a hill despite being at full revs.  It had chewed up the forward clutch on the autobox and had to be scrapped from where it died.

Anyway, hoping that one day I would get another omega, I stripped out all of the interior and stored it, much to the other half's disgust, in the spare room for 6 months.  Another point to mention, when i stripped out the interior i found that the inside of the doors, door pillars and sills were completely rotted away and replaced with filler, nice!

Last week I managed to get hold of a V reg CD 2.0 16v auto.  It has only done 60'000 miles and is in perfect condition, not even a stone chip on it.  Even better I got it for a measly £150.  The only small niggle is that the engine doesn't work.  OK, so maybe a slightly bigger niggle than i make out, but hopefully an easy enough fix once I track down the problem!

It starts fine, but runs really badly, like it's not firing on all cylinders.  It also backfires through the exhaust and the inlet and seems to run better at higher revs. The PO had changed the temp sensor, full exhaust, idle valve, egr assembly, plugs and leads and cylinder head.  Since I've had it I have tried a different coilpack and giving the plenum a damn good clean out.  I also tried a different ecu, but didn't have the transponder that went with it, so it didn't even want to fire.

Anyone got any ideas?  The eml doesn't light up and i did a paperclip test but just got gibberish, a series of ten flashes and a few single flashes and a few series of 5 flashes.  also when I remove one plug at a time there doesn't seem to be any noticeable effect on the engine, although there is a spark at each plug.  If the rain stops for long enough i'm planning on taking the injector rail off and checking that there is fuel coming out of the injectors.  A faulty dis-pack has been suggested but like i said, i put another one on and it made no difference.  I can't hear any vacuum leaks anywhere either.  Is it possible to get my spare ecu to accept the transponder chip that's in the car, or would i have to get another ecu complete with chip in order to test it?

I'm looking to have to have the car on the road asap, as i'm using my 15mpg 30 year old landrover as my daily drive on a 100 mile a day commute......expensive!!

cheers, GIll

yeah that would be great thanks, let me know.  I'm not sure if it is actually the ecu that is at fault, but hopefully it's that simple!

It`s not "gibberish". It`s trying to inform you of faults. I suggest you do the test again and note down all the sequences on paper, work out the codes and then post them up. Obviously if you still think it`s gibberish go ahead and spend your money searching for what could be wrong

As i understand it, and I have had many vauxhalls and done countless paperclip tests, you get code 12, One flash, then two flashes, repeated three times.  then if there are any codes stored the codes flash up, ie: 9 flashes then 2 flashes, code 92 and so on.

when i did the test on the omega i got ten flashes, long pause ten flashes, 1 flash, 10 flashes, ten flashes, 5 flashes, 1 flash, ten flashes, ten flashes, 1 flash, ten flashes, 5 flashes and so on.  Gibberish, unless i'm missing something?

interesting, it would help if i could identify the ecu, unfortunately the sticker isn't on it anymore.  I'll disconnect the battery overnight to clear the codes then run it for a while tomorrow to see what codes i get out.  there will be spurious ones from me fiddling about disconnecting things to try and find the fault.  can i find a list the four digit codes on this forum somewhere?  I've only ever seen the other type.

cheers for that. I had a hunt about but i could only find codes for every engine but the 2 litre ecotec haha.  I meant to say before, if i can't get this engine to work i do have a 20SEH engine and manual box that i could stick in off my carlonator, but i would prefer to just have t change a sensor of some sort and keep this one if at all possible.  i always liked the ecotec when it worked haha.

This is a pretty good site for fault code explanations...
http://www.topbuzz.co.uk/info/fault_codes/fault_codes.htm
...or you could always drop in a different engine, I know of one that gives slightly better fuel consumption than your LandRover!

cheers for that guys.  I did another test armed with my new knowledge haha.  I got fault codes 0120 throttle position sensor, 0505 intake air temperature, 0110 MAF sensor, 0100 IACV.  Quite a lst, but the probelm is these are all things that i had disconected with the engine running to try and track down the problem.  I had thought that disconnecting the battery overnight would have cleared the stored codes but obviously not.  Will tech2 be my only hope now?........  either that or the SEH be going in...

cheers gill

hi guys.  I had another footer today, I replaced a couple of the rubber elbows on vac hoses that looked a little perished, but didn't make any difference.  ONe thing though, i took the vac hose off the fuel pressure regulator, should this not cause some difference to the running of the engine?  could it be the regulator that is the problem?
