After market cats
« on: 21 July 2010, 08:02:11 »

Prior to last christmas internals of my nearside catalytic converter came loose(the brick) and started making a really nasty rattle.
As neede it repaired asap and both cats were original circa 1998 went to local exhaust/tyre outfit and they came up with cheapest price IO could find locally of £178 including new lamba sensor as they felt original would bust off if removed.
Ever since I have been convinced that the car is now more "raspy" and it is starting to get on my nerves so whilst out and outbout went into another speedy fit place on the pretext that exhaust was blowing so they could get car in the air.
As they were very quite had a really good nose around under car with the exhaust chap(actually he was very helpfull)and came to the conclusion th major noise was from this replacement cat.
When I return to original exhaust place armed with my receipt and making comments about replacement under warranty what make should I insist they fit for me,as sure thay have used cheapest of the cheap and dont just want another of the same model/make.
Any advise on best oem that they could source,as above.
Thanks as always

None of them.

Genuine cats cost what they do for a good reason....they last well.

Yet to see a good aftermarket cat, they dont last and they are noisey.

Hence why we always say to fit good second hand cats

So looks like I either put up with the noise and just swallow it or look out for a breaker with just the nearside of a genuine origin and bite the bullet and replace it and recyle the other !
