Steering wheel removal
« on: 30 July 2010, 09:28:54 »

Hi Folks,
I've finally found my Carbon Irmscher Steering wheel (with radio controls) and want to swap it for the current one.

Not being confident with automotive DIY  :-[and having seen the backwards and forwardsing (sic) of Mr Haynes Chapters 10 &12 required,  :-?wondered how difficult it was? :-/

anyone fancy a trip to London - I'd like to contribute a 'How to' but feel the need for assistance.

Any advice or assistance on offer?

Matthew

Disconnect battery at least 30 minutes prior to starting. A torx bolt each side from the rear at 3 and 9 o'clock to remove the airbag. Crack nut but leave it on the last 3 or 4 turns (VERY IMPORTANT!!!). Lots of pulling and wiggling it should pop, maybe a few firm bangs from behind with the heel of your hand as you pull with the other. The (VERY IMPORTANT!!!) reason you leave the nut on a few turns is that when it pops it will fly off and 1) yanks all of the steering control and airbag wires out and 2) smack you in the face/mouth and sting considerably!

As haynes says - refitting is the reverse of removal :y
