diff change
« on: 30 July 2010, 19:40:07 »

I have a 96 3.0 MV6 manual. It has standard 3.70:1 diff.
It is in my opinion that this gear setup is too long.
It is very good for autobahn, but I dont use it very often, and even if I do, i drive up to 150...160 kmph.
Therefore, this 240+ kmph gearratio setup is useless for me.

On the other hand, in urban driving, the car is not qiuck engouh for it's power.

So, i'm thinking of replacing my 3.70:1 diff with a shorter one (3.90:1 of an automatic 3.0 v6, or 4.22:1 of an automatic 2.5 V6).

Has anybody done this? what are the impressions?
Also, will the 2.5 V6 (or 2.0 16v) diff break if mounted to 3.0 v6?

PS. I had an automatic 2.5 V6 estate (4.22:1 diff), whose gearbox brokedown, so we replaced it with an manual one, but left the auto diff...the car had great accelerations, especially in low speeds.

I hava a 2000MY 3.0 manual with 3.9 ratio diff. I' cant feel too much difference, Previous this car I owned a 3.0 manual with 3.7 diff. Perhaps the acceleration is faster a little bit now but not with  seconds.. :P The fuel consumption is the same like wilt 3.7.The rev is a little bit higher at any speed, but I can use the 5th at 50km/h without any problem. I don't use the car on highways so I can't give you information about the top speed, I used at 140KM/h but I don't remember how much was the rev at that speed. But I will check it for you, as I will refit the transmission tomorrow.

A diff from a 2.5 will be more than strong enough

If you want good acceleration go for the 4.22 from the 2.5 auto, it is plenty strong enough for the torque of a 3.0.
Only problem is the fuel consumption, the increased acceleration is addictive and the fuel tank empties at an equally fast rate.
I swapped the 4.22 for a 3.7 to get better economy but it is too tall, a 3.9 would have been a better compromise.
