Engine temp
« on: 17 August 2010, 18:01:06 »

Ok,'may sound a stupid question but which switch is it that controls the fans and tell them when to come on and off. Is it one of the two on the rad itself or is it another one.

I've been given the test but I don't have acres to a tester and wouldn't know where to start with one even if I had one.

I'll take a stab at this, as you've been waiting a while.

Ours only has the one, 3-pin switch on the rad just below the top hose; and as far as I know this is the only thing that triggers the main fan at low or high speed depending on the temperature of the coolant  passing it.  It has two separate switches inside it, which in turn control some relays which bring the fan on as required.

The other switch on yours I can only guess is to do with aircon fans.  No idea how many pins that one may have.

There is quite a complex arrangement of relays that allow both the front pair of fans and the rear fan behind the radiator to run at either half or full speed.

On a V6 with air con this depends on the coolant temperature (2 2 stage switches) and also on the state of the air con system (compressor engaged or not, and also refrigerant pressure).

If you have a problem, probably best to describe the symptoms and we'll see if we can figure out what's going on.

It's running hotter than I would like . It used to run at 95/96 and fan would come on. Then all of a sudden when the weather warmed up it started to creep up towards 100 and on occasions above. I've replaced radiator, thermostat and auxillary coolant pump, but it's still creeping towards 100. Normal temp is around 98 but fan comes on at different temps and it doesn't always stay on. Air con fans are coming on ok snd are working overtime sometimes.

I've also flushed the system and their appeared to be no blockages! :-? :-/
