Steering lock issue
« on: 20 August 2010, 14:03:47 »

Hi fellas,
A couple of times recently, after starting the car, put into reverse to back off the drive, only to find the steering is still locked :-?
It has happened in Drive...pulled forward, try to turn and for an instant it is still locked. Hitting the brake pedal and waggling the wheel seems to clear it. ;)
However....what concerns me most is, if the steering lock stays on with the ignition on....is there any chance that the lock could engage whilst driving ??????
Hope you can throw some light on the problem :y

That doesn't sound good, and I would say it does need investigating. Have a look at the lock barrel refurbishment howto for a start.

The lock barrel should not be able to travel back to allow the key to turn until the steering lock has disengaged.

I had this happen 3 months ago almost crashed when lock came on and not on one occasion either this happened a few times.
I replaced the barrel and it hasn't done it since.

At the back of the lock barrel is a pin through the shaft, at right angles to it. This rides up over a cam to draw the lock barrel in as it's turned and I suspect it's this action that releases the steering lock.

When I had problems (of a different nature) I found that this had started to wear.

I think there's something at the front of the barrel that prevents it popping out again while the key is turned that might be worth checking.

If the wear appears to be in the lock barrel I would replace it with new. If the lock barrel appears OK you are looking for something further back in the steering lock mechanism.

Hmmmmm.....worried now. As you suggest, Kevin, I'll pull it apart tomorrow.
