Hello, just going to be doing my exhaust manifold gasket soon. I have seen some nuts available and they are made of copper. Would it be better to use these as oppose to steel for example? If so why? What should I use? Thanks!

The original nuts are very soft and I think made out of copper. They still rust onto the stud and almost become one with the stud. So make sure you get the socket on them properly or it's quite easy to round one off.

Its usual for exhaust manifold nuts to be made of brass, not copper.

Hex sockets have much less chance of slipping than the multipoint sort.

it's a heat corrosion thing. brass nuts are less likely to corrode to the studs than steel.

mind you, if you're considering changing to Vx brass nuts ( i.e. original equipment ), then some stainless nuts from a local factors could be a better and cheaper answer.

When I replaced mine I seem to remember them being copper with stainless thread insert in them.

At the time thought they were a bit expensive, but reasoned that if VX thought such an elaborate nut was required, who was I to argue !!
