TD starter sometimes just clicks.
« on: 27 August 2010, 17:32:44 »

Sometimes works first time, sometimes 5-10 goes, I can hear a loud click in the engine compartment, I guess it's the solenoid on the starter. Anyone had this problem? How long before it's terminal.

I would check for a bad connections battery and starter.

could be bad/dirty connection - check all connections on starter motor and battery terminals - clean if corroded.   :y

Could also be battery low, if not probably bad connection.

Hi ihad exactly the same problem with mine, remove the starter (easily said then done, remove inlet manifold first )you can get it from below if your lucky enough to have a ramp.when you have the starter in your hand you will notice the nose of the starter (the bit that pokes into the gearbox)will be worn around the shaft, the housing is alloy and the shaft is steel,i dont know if there is supposed to be a bush or not if there is its well gone. strip down the starter, not bad until you get to the two studs that hold the outer windings in they were well siezed in mine and we snapped them getting them out (had to manufacture new ones from threaded rod and fill and retap the housing, good when your in engineering)remove the bendix and make sure you give it a good clean,i didnt and it still missed a few times had to remove again and clean it.measure the hole in the nose of the starter and the shaft diameter and make a bronze bush and press it in build back up and you will have fixed it.otherwise pay through the nose for a recon starter(dont buy a s/h one it will be the same as yours. :y
