The first time I drove a auto I kept stamping on the brake  ;D
Took about 5 mins to get it in my head not to ::)
Now I put my left leg well out of the way till I get used to it.
You could tie her leg to the seat to stop this or risk headbutting the windscreen ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

In all seriousness, get her to cross her left leg under her right one.

It worked for me. Stopped me headbutting the windscreen a number of times.

Funnily enough I never had this problem when I hired cars in the US. It was more the cornering (yes, they do exist in the US!) I had issues with, had to use a lot more of the brakes than I usually do, and the rubber band effect on the throttle doesn't inspire confidence through the corners.

I did hit my left hand on the door a few times as I reached for the gear stick though. Almost got in the passenger side a few times as well ::)

I've never had a problem swapping between the two, and I think only once or twice have I "gone for the clutch" in an auto but then I do drive both on a regular basis.

It seems to be folk who only drive an auto for years on end and then get back into a manual who have real bother.

with the exception of about 20 miles it is all straight fast A road and little use of the brake or clutch......

i think giving her a dead leg as she gets in the car might work  :y

On a similar note, I regularly switch between 5sp and 6sp manual gearboxes, and for a while I worried that I'd end up going for the non-existant 6th on the Omega (which is reverse of course :o) but I never have. I even recently drove an automatic in the UK (and yes I hated it ;) ) and the only time I went for the clutch was when I was first pulling away and I wanted to put it into reverse. I actually found myself looking at the floor before remembering it was automatic! In defence though it was an 840Ci so very similar to my own car -- easy to forget it's missing the "driver's pack" option ;)
