Rubbing Strip
« on: 26 September 2010, 15:43:45 »

A while ago one of the OOF members posted a thread about repairing a rear rubbing strip that had been damaged when it caught on the front car door. My issue was that I had removed the strip on mine to spray the door and found that the metal backing was badly corroded. VX quoted £50 plus for a replacement!! Hard to believe I know, so I attempted to renovate the old one - not very successfully.
After a trip to my local breakers I removed one from a scrap car, the metal backing was in excellent condition and it only cost me a quid!  ;D The hard part was getting it off without damaging it or bending the backing steel, they are fixed on with two plastic clips near each end and very strong, thick double sided sticky tape. The trick was to cut through the tape with a long slim blade which you can put flat onto the door skin off the donor car - it makes a mess of the paintwork. Once the tape is off the clips can be carefully eased out.
Hopefully this will allow someone else to save their money as it did with me.  ;)
