As my car as been standing now for several weeks and will be likely to stand for a while longer through personal injury, would it be a advisable to turn the engine a couple of turns by hand from the crankshaft pulley rather than start the engine and what way do I turn it (I assume clockwise)

I wouldn't worry about it if it's only been a few weeks. I've just started up a car that's been stood for around 6 months with no problems ..... so far

When I quickly read the query I had the old visions of turning the engine with a crankhandle!!

If you do really want to turn the engine by hand, you may want to take the plugs out

I was under the impression that starting the engine and let it idle would do more harm than good...what is the general opinion on this?

Long-term, starting it occasionally and only running it for a short time will tend to build up water inside the exhaust system.  If however you run it long enough to get the exhaust system nice and hot from front to back, this won't be an issue.

One benefit of starting and running (for a decent time) as opposed to turning by hand is that it will keep the battery charged.
