autobox lock up
« on: 05 November 2010, 22:58:01 »

dont know much about the innards of an autobox so i thought id do a bit of light reading..
it mentions a lock up clutch.
from this i assume that at a point of given revs, the engine speed  will be matched by road speed?
is that correct?

next chapter, epcyclic boxes...

Lockup effectively disables the torque converter so you lose the variable gearing it provides and it behaves more like a manual box. Mine locks up above between 40 and 45 MPH in either 4th or 3rd gear. They will lockup in 2nd if the fluid is getting a bit hot too.
