traction control/ abs light?
« on: 13 November 2010, 20:42:31 »

hi guys, when i start my 1997 mv6 all the lights on the dash go out as they should, but within a couple of seconds of pulling off the tc and abs lights come on, im assuming a sensor is faulty, the question is does the tc and abs use the same sensor and is there any way of finding out which one it is without paying garage prices, or is there another thing it could be? thanks in advance. :)

In the engine bay, passenger side. Look for all the brake pipes coming together. An ar$e of a job to remove/refit. You can either send it off to have it repaired for around £100 or replace it with a 2nd hand unit BUT it must come the same year, engine and box setup as yours :y

His speedo is working  :y
Much more likely to be an ABS wheel sensor.  :y

Without trying to load up Mark's already busy schedule  ::) you could try contacting MarksDTM - he lives in you neck of the woods & has a proper Tech II diagnostics kit that will tell you where the fault lies!  :y :y

Still likely to be abs ecu - we had abs/tc lights on on the estate for a while before speedo packed up and steering got heavy!!

Checked and cleaned wheel sensors - no difference.

Sorry  flexbuttcheck1 but your abs ecu is nackered  :(

I would say the codes need reading from the ABS ECU to be sure.

The normal ECU failure more involves in it packing up completely. No speedo, lights on, no diag connection possible.

The fact that this comes on as pulling away makes me thing it's not seeing one of the wheel signals or something goes wrong in the selftest / pump priming which  just as the ECU detects movement of the vehicle.

STOP!

1997?  Is it a prefacelift or minifacelift?

If a mini facelift, yes, ABS ECU likely. Post 1998 cars (from Aug/Sep 1997) are prone to ABS failure.

If a early prefacelift, check other options, including the abs sensors first, pre 1998 models are far less prone to ABS ECU failure

various subtle differences but the easy differences are:
solid head restraints & radio controls on the steering wheel on a mini facelift.  :y

Bugger, just seen that. Retail spec MV6 (ie, not ex-plod)? That'll be a 1998 model, mini facelift, and prone to ABS ECU failures  :'(
