Exhaust problems or not??
« on: 20 November 2010, 15:40:45 »

The wife 'phoned to say  that some wadding type material was hanging out of the exhaust tail pipe.
The system was fitted 27K ago, with new cats.I've been told there is no excessive noise and the car is running normally.New engine is also 27K old  (3years old)
Is wadding normal in exhaust systems,or is some-one playing silly bu@@rs?
Any insights welcome, as the wife won't be home before dark. :'( >:( :(

New box needed.... no matter how much you pull out more will appear .. the box is breaking down internally ... if it gets bad enough the wadding will block the exhaust causing poor running/bad fuel consumption, and, at worst, the other parts of the exhaust to fail due to excess pressure .. :(

It is fibre glass, it is used to absorb the noise coming from the exhaust, it is packed around perforated tubes and these tubes corrode very easily, usualy in the back box first as this where there tends to be more condensation.
As these tubes break down  the fibre glass wadding gets pulled in to the exhaust stream and can appear out of the tailpipe.
If this is happening in the back box (which is most likely) it is a reminder that the box is on its way out ,apart from that it should cause no other problems. If however, the wadding is coming from a middle box this could then cause a blockage in the back box which could lead to running problems and even cause the engine to cut out or stop running altogether :(

Took an hour to clear the wadding out of the rear box ,a carrier bag full.
Using a wire coat-hanger it seem to be clear.Went for a drive and all seems fine.On idle instant consumption is 0.3gal/h last time i looked used to be 0.2 gal/h.
 the system is GM .

My sister had this happen on her Rover 200. She was really upset, thinking that somehow a cat had gone to sleep in the engine bay and then been chewed up and spat out the exhaust. Very funny ;D

Does something needs to be replaced when you see some blonde wigish fibers (you guys called it wagging) coming out of your exhaust pipe? What will happen if you ignored that case?

Filth_Mobile_Jim: LOL. That is really funny to have a cat roasted inside! Maybe she was influence by the comercial of subaru it sucks the pigeon then feathers coming out of its tail pipe. I hope youve seen that on you tube.

I had the same thing happen on my car in October. Hooked it out with a coat hanger, had no more appear since. No further problems since apart from the exhaust is noticably a bit noisier.

Been there, done that...  >:( >:( >:( Last winter I had this whig hangign from the back box. Fuel consumtion was high, thiought it was the cold winter... Then, one morning when accelerating to motorway... Pedal to the floor and the loudest BANG I can imagine in a car. The back box blew up, all internals wrapped around the left drive shaft. So, the lesson: do NOT drive the car with a whig hanging from the exhaust  :y
