Rear discs stuck on hubs.
« on: 15 December 2010, 20:29:24 »

A few months back I replaced my rear discs and handbrake shoes on the Red Omega. They worked a treat. I followed the OOF guide and enjoyed doing the job.

I thought I would service the project car as the handbrake operated on the last notch. (Still got through the MOT though.......)

I gave up as I just couldn't get the discs off. Yes I have removed the disc retaing grub screw. yes I slackened the shoes off.( In fact so much they don't work at all now)

Tried tapping with a rubber mallet and a hammer. Any suggestions please?

Bigger hammer, I had to use a sledgie to get mine off, the lip was so deep in the drum that it pulled the shoes clean off with it.

had to be done .  and nothing broke, maybe a bent retaining hole for the shoe pin, but you get washers for that.  ;D

and yes that was the shoes tightened all the way.

Chances are the handbrake shoes will have worn a large depression into the hubs, thus leaving a lip you must overcome to remove the hub complete.

fair chance that when you whack it with the muullerhammer, you will either a) remove the linings from the shoes, thus requiring new ones or b) wrench the shoes from the backing plate, pulling the retaining pins throught he backing plate in the process, thus adding to future fun on reassembly.

You tried the tap/rotate/tap/rotate technique??

Added with some choice colourfull language and a lot bigger hammer if need be, and to hell with the consequences.

through the adfjuster hole with a torch shining in there you can make out the star wheel, first squirt a little plusgas/wd40 etc in on the adjuster then use a flat blade screwdriver to back the adjuster off, the adjusters are at 1oclock one side and eleven oclock the other, cant remember which is which :-X its fiddly but doable and you wont wreck the shoes this way or damage the pins etc :y

yep but not enough to clear the lip on the discs? either that or one has come adrift(brake shoe) and it catching, or he needs to hit it harder as its just the disc stuck to the hub, but i read it as the disc wont come over the shoes? which says to me he hasnt unadjusted the shoes enough?
or did i read it wrong? ::)

If it is stuck to the hub and not budging, try two hammers of the same size either side of the hub i.e. 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock hitting each side at the same time also rotate the hub a few times

Or knock one side (9 oclock) then put a wedge or prybar in, then knock the opposite side (3 oclock) and carry on until it comes off  ;)

You have two potential joys here:

1) The disc is rusted to the hub. Disc doesn't move at all. Needs some good solid kicking with the flat of your feet whilst sat facing the disc. Left then right until there's some movement.

2) There's some movement but the disc won't come off. Shoes stuck in the groove. Rust builds up on the lid and even with maximum adjuster in it won't come off. Make sure the adjuster really is all the way in (no thread or gap showing between the star and the other end of the adjuster). Make sure the handbrake cable is slack or disconnected. Now lever the disc off, dragging the lip on the disc past the shoes.
