Feezing temps = alternator bearings go bye bye!
« on: 02 January 2011, 13:41:00 »

Hey up, it would appear the frost got into my alternator bearings during the recent cold snap and have b"£$%^&d them up. Anybody else noticed the frost breaking something or am I just lucky?!?!?!  :( >:(

So far so good and I've ploughed through quite a bit of snow! Think you might have been unlucky.

allways give bearings a good squirt in cold weather just to be on safe side, and water pump a bit of can grease in the hole...

The cold and ice wont goose the bearings.

Pressure washing and a lack of under tray will over time, its grit and grime that takes them out.

Not to hard to replace and about 10 quid for a set of SKF ones

NOOOOooo...

1) You cant do anything to the alternator ones as the are the 2RS types....so have rubber lip seals (and need grease not lube)

2) Stay away from the water pump, they are not the type of bearings that require grease and you could cause more harm than good as the grease will trap water and grit  :y

Ah, well there's no undertray so it'll be the grit then!  :y

There is nothing you can do to help the alternator bearings (except replace them which is pretty easy to do) or fit the under tray  :y

sparking could be the bushes going, if they start going they heat up the rear bearing.. But you need another one now :'(

In case you haven't already seen it, there's a guide on the alternator, including bearing sizes.  :y
