Hopefull not a head gasket?
« on: 05 January 2011, 11:19:31 »

Hi guys i have a 94 2.5l gls manual with 74000 miles.

recently it appears to have developed some cooling issues, this dont happen all the time and never whilst the car is on the move.

sometimes when sitting with the engine running the temp gage will head up over 100, if i hold the car revs at around 3000rpm for 2secs the temp starts to drop back down to normal or if i start to move forward even like 5 meters the temp drops back down to normal, anyone have any ideas?

thanks in advance
(am praying its not the early signs of a failing head gasket)

has an oil leak somewhere which it has had since i got it but dosnt appear to be a water leak anywhere.

i had a head gasket go on a 306 i once owned but the temp flew through the roof even when the car was moving where this dosnt when the car is travelling?

i have no history for those swaps, from what i said is it more likly to be a water pump/thermostat issue rather than a head gasket problem?

take the top off the bottle and run engine get up to temp and then let it cool down.. failing that need to flush out systerm and back flow systerm to get any muck out

Most likely one of 3 things...

[olist]
  • Air lock
  • Stuck thermostat
  • Water pump

It'd be worth checking for any oily residue in the expansion tank. The oil cooler can fail which dumps oil in the coolant and can cause cooling problems.

Other than that, give the cooling system a good flush through and refill, try to burp all the air out by running it with the expansion tank cap of and squeezing the radiator hoses, and see if that helps.

EDIT: Head gasket failures are rare on the V6 engines, so I doubt it'll be that.

sounds like a water movement problem don't know much about these motors but are the fans kicking in? gotta say with a head gasket you would more than likely have a couple more symptons than just getting hot at idle, i would go the route of thermostat, waterpump as wellung said.
