check coolant message - bit its full
« on: 04 February 2011, 16:17:57 »

is there a sensor in the header tank that could be causing this message to come up on my 3.0 elite?

the car has plenty of water in the system does not need topping up but sometimes get this message saying check coolant.

The float in the header tank is sticking or is goosed. Just replace the tank, they're around £30  :y

As said, probably a goosed sensor/float but worth checking that the sensor plug under the expansion bottle is pushed fully home. :y

Remove the cap and stick your fingers in, bob the float up and down a few times and spin it around on its mount.

If its just crudded up a bit this will fre it off and its well worth trying as an easy and free first step.

If the sensor has failed, and it's not a corroded connection underneath the expansion tank, the full on bodge is to unplug the sensor and short the two pins on the connector with half a paperclip. The warning goes away and you now have to monitor the coolant the old fashioned way - by looking under the bonnet!

To look under the expansion tank just flick the (stiff) clip off that holds the tank to the wing with a screwdriver.

Had the same fault on mine when I got it, loads of coolant but the message was there all the time.  Got a replacement tank and sensor from Vauxhall for just over £30 as they don't sell the sensor separate.
