Is this even possible? I changed the engine oil and fir a new o-ring to the plug and now it seems to be dripping... Although it leaks oil from somewhere higher quite a bit so it might be just running down and dripping from the plug (as the oil runs down the block and might run down the sump and to the plug...)

Id give the sump a wipe down and see then if its coming from the plug.

Tried that and it was wiped clean after the oil change. It drips oil, some oil on the sump "sleeve" etc. Just want to know how common it is for sump plugs to leak.

Not really common. You sure the O ring didn't move from its recess/seat in the plug?

Quite sure. done a few and it tightened ok all the way and sits on the sump surface quite nicely.

The area around my sump plug has started to blister a little with rust. I suspect that if it gets much worse than that too may start leaking.

I had a new sump plug put on mine after last owner mangled it, that was at 84k, now at 152k, its never leaked. Although the rubber seal could do with replacing, due to the amount of oil changes i've done, but its still oil tight.

Did you torque the sump plug? I only do mine to 15Nm, also check for oil dripping around the oil filter, again that should be torqued to just 15Nm...

I had a Mk 1 Astra, the sump had actually gone porous!  I was convinced it was the sump plug.
