coolant loss
« on: 08 February 2011, 14:59:59 »

My old 3 litre elite has been plagued by this problem since I have got it  2 years ago. It loses around one pint every 200 miles. It had a leaky hbv which I replaced, thinking that would do the job. Shortly after that a leak developed in on of the hoses at the back. Replaced that, but it is still losing the same amount of water. There is no water in the oil, and pressure builds up and stays in the system after the engine has been switched off. This is what I can't understand. Surely a leak, however small, would mean that the system would depressurise. This is driving me nuts. Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved.

if its hard to find try some water dye, if there is no signs after on engine, then would think its in the exhaust systerm, but then would need to find out were.

How can it get into the exhaust system? But in any case, my point still stands about the pressure.

How is coolant going to leak from the exhaust?  :-?

Checked the main rad hoses for any leaks? Both when hot & cold?

How handy are you with spanners? Pop the plenum off, and injection manifold and hunt for leaks around oil cooler plate and pipe off the coolant bridge in particular.

There is no evidence of a leak outside the engine. If there was, as I said, surely a eventually after switching off, the sytem would depressurise through the leak.

even a pin prick hole would not depressrise the systerm, there is also the sponge afect well no holes in pipes or gasgets but loss of water level it just seeps out(old pipes and old rubber seals), have you had a pressure test done, do you get a lot off gray smoke on start up...
