Waterproofing my new(ish) dispack
« on: 24 February 2011, 23:33:59 »

So I took delivery of a second hand dispack and set of leads today and it all looks to be in pretty good nick for the price paid. So far so good!   :)

It seems to me that there's abit of a design fault with the dispack in so far that they are vunerable to water ingress.  So I'm wondering if its worth giving it a coat of paint or a smear of silicon to give it abit of extra protection  :-/

As well as sealing up my scuttle panel of course  :y

I wish I had done something similar when I had mine replaced about a year ago....didn't think about it until after.

I have done something about it since but can't say for the fear of being ridiculed  :D ;D

Ermmmmmmmmmm No !

Ok !   I'll tell.

Found out where the water could get through the scuttle, popped to Morrisons and picked up on of those foil party plates. Flattened it out, folded it in half and stuck it to the underside of the scuttle above and over the dis pack position.

Figured it would divert any water leaks away from the dis pack, plus being foil, would get ruddy hot in the engine bay and evaporate any water that drips on to it.

Ok...a bit crap but it seems to be working...will let you know in about 3 years time..

I reckon a decent de-greasing, then going over with a couple of coats of silicone spray would do the job - it used to keep moisture at bay for donkies when I fitted alarms, so expect it'd do the job with the odd drip from a scuttle?

I had thought of something along the line of Duggs, only had not got as clever is a foil plate - i was toying with a piece of damp proof membrane tucked under the scuttle rubber and draped over the dis, but did not get past worrying about the heat.

As it stands I give the whole are a good whoosh of wd40 every time I have the bonnet up. And tried to fix the leaks of course - belt and braces never hurt.

Can you still get Holts ignition sealer, I wonder? Used to do the trick on an old mini.

The foil plate idea is a good one Duggs, better than a condom.. ::) :-X

I've an old tube of instant gasket somewhere, so I think I'll give it a coat of that and may try something similar with a foil plate. Thanks for the replies  :y

Thing is regarding the plate....you can press and "mould" it to any shape you like under there...in fairness it's hard to see it's there at all now.

I like this Idea, I have a second hand coil pack coming and would like to do the "foil plate trick"  :y as added protection, any chance of a pic or 2 Duggs and a few words on how you did what.

LOL !  Here's the technical "how to".

Buy said foil party plate.

Place on table.

Fold left and right hand side into the middle, forming a "longish sheet" of foil and then flatten.

Although once it's placed above the dis pack area I used a bit of duck tape to stick it to the foam under the scuttle. Thereafter I just moulded it to the scuttle using my fingers...In fairness two plates in line would cover the whole of the area just to be on the safe side.

Important Note:  If I was doing it for the first time again, I wouldn't use duck tape, only because it's too strong. Use a tie wrap or something.
