Thumping noise from nearside rear suspension
« on: 04 March 2011, 20:21:17 »

I began to notice a gentle thump from the nearside rear suspension a couple of months ago. The new office has a free car park with some vicious speed humps & I'm not sure whether the noise was there before, but not noticeable, or whether the humps have dislodged something :-/

Last weekend I fitted new Lemforder bushes to the rear subframe. The rubber had totally separated from the outer sleeve on the near side and was clinging on on the offside.

It hasn't made any difference to the noise  :( but it has firmed up the rear end and reduced the rear wheel steering :y

I suspect the noise is from a failing (self levelling) shock absorber. Before I phone AndyC and order new shock absorbers is there anything else I should check?

Had the thumping rattle on the near-side rear ,which turned out to be a broken rear coil spring. The end bit had broken off and sometimes rattled so replaced both sides cured the noise and now have  a great ride.

I have checked the springs, both are still complete. They look as though they may have been replaced shortly before I bought the car 18 months ago.

Having had failed sl shocks, reading your title, then seeing you have an Elite, my first thought was....

.....failed sl shock. Oil leaks out, all damping is lost, and the road wheel bounces off bumps and thumps when it lands again.

So, going by your desrpcription, as you suspect imo.  :y

The bolts on the subframe bushes weren't particularly tight when I took them out. The bolts nearest the sills had some rusting on the threads and the captive nut on one decided it didn't like captivity ::) so I had to wedge a screwdriver in next to it  to get the bolt out :(

All the bolts are torqued up to the figure given in Haynes now though I couldn't find a figure for the big bolt in the centre :-/.
