maf (sorry i know!)
« on: 09 March 2011, 19:51:38 »

Have finally had time to do a paperclip test on my elite and its the first vauxhall i have ever had that has NO CODES :-)
However , it runs very lumpy when cold, has this last couple of days struggled to rev for the first 30 secs after cold starting, and cuts out when ever it feels like it, usually at a junction or on a bend.
I have been out and sprayed all i could with wd - no difference, i have had the panel by the wipers off, no obvious air leaks.
I had given up but the muckanic from across the street said it sounds like air and persuaded me to unplug the maf - tickover levelled out and will see what happens when i go work in the morning (had had a couple beers before i decided investigate), but the point of my post is - can the maf be faulty without showing a code?
I have searched both here and the wider world wide web and have heard different stories??
Thanks in advance
Mick

If it cuts out on tick over/throttle off when moving, might be idle control valve, try cleaning with carb cleaner and lube with light oil.

Or, possibly more likely depending on when it happens, crank sensor. Which is kmown to not throw a code.

Think i would bet cs given your description. See what others say...

Yes.

Ideally you need to get someone with Tech2 to look at the live readings and see if they make sense.

By unplugging the MAF sensor you make will prompt the ECU to run in limp mode. If it runs better like that then with the MAF connected then the MAF might be faulty.

Has your car ever had an oiled (AKA K&N) air filter fitted?

Filter oil on the MAF sensor will render it useless....

well it didnt cut out at all!!  :D :D drove it hard and it dropped to 500 rpm bounced a tiny bit then settled.

but on the down side, for the last few days it has done something that was more noticable today, for the first 30 secs or so whilst cold - it misses badly if you try and accelerate too hard - am wondering if this could be because its been running so rich since i got it in october? and it may need some new plugs?

any more suggestions greatly appreciated, but i guess the maf is goosed?

Thanks

Mick
