my gearbox seems to be a bit erratic, not as smooth as it used to be, it will hold on for what seems like ages before it changes from 2nd to 3rd and sounds like im thrashing it when i am not on kick down it just stays there for ages even when i release the throttle it still wont change up for about 40 secs

finding the ecu wont help, there will be nothing wrong with it.
(can possibly run a later software version, but it need to remain in the car to be updated)

Have you checked the gearbox fluid level?  or even better given it a full ATF change?
or had a code reader on the gearbox to see if any codes stored?  has it ever given you the automatic gearbox message on the display.
Does it ever really thump into gear?

The TCMs are supremely reliable, so that definately wouldn't be my first port of call.

Check the ATF, both for level and its condition.  And codes stored in the TCM (most code readers cannot read the TCM) might give some clues, but I suspect its a hydromechanical fault

Could be a failing cam sensor (code P0340).  Mine did this couple of times when I was getting the spanner or engine light on.  It's worth just disconnecting the cam sensor and reconnecting again.  This worked for me, but YMMV!
