Thanks 2Woody but Huston we still have a problem
« on: 07 April 2011, 19:28:17 »

First of all many thanks 2woody for replacing wishbones and steering idler plus a whole host of other tweaks which allowed my CDX to fly through its MOT.

However having left Woody on Monday evening, to drive the twenty miles home, I  put my foot down at the bottom of a hill and a puff of smoke from the offside wheel arch area and a nasty "almost blown exhaust" sound emitted from the engine compartment. So I pulled over and rang Woody.

Fortunately he arrived and diagnosed the problem as a split air hose which feeds the injection system ?? So I bought a small rubber hose from Bristol St and Woody kindly fitted it yesterday afternoon.

Fast forward almost 24 hours and the same thing has happened again. Foot down, bearing in mind this is the automatic version of the 2.5 CDX, and blowing sound occurred again. I've since looked under the bonnet and have tried to work out if its the same hose thats split but its definitely the same "almost blown exhaust" noise.

So, if you havent nodded off since the first paragraph, my question is "What's causing this sluggish performance and repeat failure ? "

Brief recent history. Rocker Cam Gaskets replaced due to sluggish performance which then came to light as a missing 3rd cylinder which was due to a faulty coil pack. Woody replaced coil pack and as far as I'm aware all six cylinders are now operating perfectly.

However during the brief "normal" period yesterday between blowing hoses, I noticed a slight sluggishness from the engine when put to the test. When I put my foot down the response was "intermittent". It would respond but then slow then respond again almost like a "kangaroo hop" from an inexperienced learner driver but much more subtle than that.

I realise this is unlikely to be enough to give anyone a perfectly clear view of whats going on but I'm no mechanic I'm afraid :-[

For that hose to blow, normally points to a blocked exhaust or cat I beleive.

Yes ,it sounds like a blocked exhaust or cat causing back pressure and splitting the pipe.

And the sluggishness and kangaroo hop is exactly what I had when my rear silencer was blocked with silencing wadding last year. ;)

All very interesting stuff. Must admit I kinda thought blockage somewhere along the line but is it a problem that has lain dormant (exhaust replaced last year before we bought the vehicle) or something new thats happened either as a result of recent work or fair wear and tear ?

Thanks for your input people we'll see what we come up with tomorrow. :y

Your misfire will have been pouring unburnt fuel into the cats where it ignites melting the coatings in the honeycomb and causing a blockage.
Been there done that.

I guess we can infer that given its passed the MOT that the cats are ok (as they dont tend to work then suddenly collapse).

As for the exhaust, where was it replaced, what brand and does it have a warranty.

Ray did a good job with the gaskets but after he got broken into and they smashed the driver's window, I thought it better to remove it - just in case they came back. :(

April last year and cheap and cheerful from Kwik Fit apparently so probably no warranty by now ? The previous owners are checking to see if they still have the invoice.

As for the cat, it passed all emissions tests on Monday so unless its just happened (within the last two days)  I'm not sure if it can be the culprit ?

What would be the best way to test an exhaust for blockages ????????

I'm betting that the secondary air injection valve has stuck, thus allowing exhaust through to the atmosphere for longer than needed.

That requires a double failure as both the one way valve and the vac oprated valve would need to fail which is less likely.

Kwik Fit + Exhaust = over priced and cheap crap.....rarely last well sadly (and one year is not un-typical)
