Strange sound from oil filler and some squeeks
« on: 25 April 2011, 20:02:37 »

Greetings and salutations,

cca one month after oil change (Shell 10W40) I have noticed some strange sounds comming from the engine.
At first there is some metal squeeking sound (like metal wheel running with little or no oil), can be heart mostly only on idle.
Then some strange behaviour started. When staying turned off on sun for long time, it seems to get some misfire after start (never encountered one before, so I am not sure - it is vibrating slightly and the sound is not so regular, no warning lights and RPMs are fine). It disappear after a while. But happens only on cold start when outside is hot (when I am going from work). As I was checking the possible cause, I have opened the oil filler cap (donīt know why...) and then I was able to hear another strange sound. It is like slowly frying some steak (or slow rain drops). I was looking on internet and found this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boq9FyMwzI4
It is very close sound, but I do not have any smoke from the tube.
Does anyone know, what this can be? And if it is ok to drive it?
I also think I have some leaks in cam cover gasket (surroundings was dirty of oil, but after I have cleaned it, it is clear...), can this be connected?
Thanks for any help and sorry for my english.

Hi mate

The squeak is possibly your aux belt tensioner wheel - bearing dry - can remove and repack with grease.

The sound like "slowly frying steak" is probably oil leaking fom your cam cover and dripping onto hot exhaust - replace cam cover gaskets and clean breathers.

Thanks a lot for "squeeks" :) Will look on it during cam cover gasket change.
However, I forgot to mention that the frying sound can be only heart with oil filler cap open and is definetly comming from inside the filler. Its frequency is going up and down with revs. At first I thought it is something hitting the low level of oil surface (if it is possible), but oil is topped and it can be heart right after start as well as after long drive...
