Sorry but we ned a bit more info to be of help mate, you need to check that the coolant bottle is at the correct level then if you can see any leaks from the hoses, ect.
Have you had any work done to the car that could explain why the temp gauge if not working. How long does the car take to get hot and does it overheat causing exesive pressure at the coolant cap/bottle.
Before we can help you you need to help us. post up your findings. :y

only had the car 3 months, the old boy who had it before did 2500 miles in 3 years, however he had it serviced on the dot incl belts, temp gauge hasnt worked since i got it,the needle rises if i dont turn the heater on.filled the coolant to max level on wednesday only done 70 miles since then, only leaks when engine runnin, from a quick glance underneath it appears to be dripping near where the gearbox joins the engine, wasnt leakin last week as i checked all fluids, nothing visible looking under the bonnet...did see drips on road when i reversed into drive...

Sounds like the HBV is leaking. Black starship looking thing at rear of engine. Re; temp, start engine, while it`s idling keep your hand on the top hose, should stay cool until thermostat kicks in then will get hot, if hose starts to heat up quickly, thermostat is goosed

HBV is to the right of centre in this pic. Black cylindrical shape with a small angled hose on the top
