mv6 exhaust problem
« on: 19 May 2011, 22:52:25 »

right guys, my mv6 was running ok the other day i was going down the motorway put my foot down and it started to make a whoosing noise and sounded like the exhaust was blowing and there was no real power i had alook at it and there is a pipe that runs from one side manifold to the other on the front of the engine it has 2 rubber hoses connecting it together and the right hand side rubber hose was all blown to pieces so i replaced the rubber pipe and it seemed ok for about 3 miles and then its clean blown a hole in it again and is making the same sounds and a distinct lack of power also it struggles to idle when stopped does anybody know why this is happening? my mate said it was an exhaust gas recurculating pipe but he wasnt 100% any help would be much apprieciated.

It sounds like the 2ndary air injection. I had the same problem and thought it was the exhaust manifold leaking. There are non return valves in to stop exhaust gases flowing the wrong way and these can fail apparently. Not sure how many and whereabouts though.

I bridged mine with copper pipe, although if yours is down on power and not idling correctly it sounds alot more serious than mine.

Have you tried cleaning your ICV to try and sort the idling issue out?

Check your exhaust is not starting to block !!!  Rear box when it breaks down can block with a large amount of "horse hair" type wadding. If this occurs the back pressure increases dramatically until something blows .. :(

i have had this problem on a old 2.5 i had one of the cats had blocked so it put the hot gases back into the rubber pipes and kept blowing them up. took exhaust off and loads of little bits fell out.
