Engine Braking from an auto?
« on: 10 November 2011, 22:15:51 »

I seem to be getting engine braking whilst going downhills at a steady 30 to 40ish. Previous auto's have simply changed up thus requiring the brakes. The present 2.5 2000 Elite estate changes down when travelling down hills without touching the gearshift. Strange I thought. ???
And the fuel consumption is increasing. Poo!  :'(

If the gearbox ecu thinks you want engine braking, it will keep it in a lower gear...

....but its not clever enough to often get it right - its usually long periods of overrun downhill that causes it

Both the auto's I have had, a 2.5 and the 3.2 do engine braking quite well, takes a small amount of time before it kicks in but it does the job. Fuel consumption on the computor usually reaches 999 as the injectors are actually turned OFF and the engine is not firing at all.

This actually started to cause a small problem on a VERY long downhill section on the way back from Millau with the 'van on the back. Car was engine braking beautifuly and holding just over 50 mph nice and steady, trouble was the actual engine temperature started to drop right off and was starting to cause me worry .. but we reached the bottom fine and the temp came back up nicely once drive was restored.

the gearbox can tell if its going uphill or downhill.

and changes accordingly

On long steep downhill stretches I just drop it manually into 2 from D. It saves a lot of wear on the brake pads and heat damage to the disks, not to mention the build up of that filthy lousy brake dust on the shiny ally's!
There is no reason why you cannot use an auto box like another version of a stick job. Caravanners have done it for years (and no I am not one of them).
