Spare Wheel/Tyre
« on: 06 June 2011, 15:49:52 »

Just suffered the annoyance of a rear tyre puncture on motorway this afternoon and due to speed and need to find a safe pull in I have all but destroyed the tyre, which does give me an excuse now to get rid of both those bloody horrible Avons from the rear.

All fine and fitted spare but my questions is this:

Original tyres are 235/45/17 and when fitted spare which is a steel and accept for space it is a 205/65/15 which according to manual gives the same radius etc.

As my time this week is very limited how long could I realisticly leave this spare wheel on in terms of mileage and is there any speed restrictions I should be guided by.

The spare wheel size on your car is standard tyre size on prefacelfit omegas(except Elite)
So the answer is as long as you are comfortable and don't plan on any silly speeds.

I believe its still classed as space saver (as its not a full sized type, and is a different size to the other wheel on same axle), thus 80kph (50mph)

If it was a space saver would it not have a warning sticker on it ?

205/65/15 aren't speed rated so slow are they?

The one from my old 2.5 Elite does (not checked current 3.2 Elite).  Older cars probably dont have the stickers as it was expected back then that people would read the manual ;D

Its not so much want the tyre can do (my 2.5 Elite spare is an H rated tyre (120mph)), but the effects on handling with different sized tyres on same axle.

tyre size isnt the problem!! same rolling radius so speed will not be a factor, but the different turning speed of the wheels could well upset the ABS sensors?plus you will  have different levels of grip from the tyres, and the differential will be working hard wth one wheel turning faster than the other ?

So the general consensus is :

Only run on the spare for minimum amount of mileageas will effect diff/abs and probable handling.

Not to exceed 50 mph, although tyre is rated at considerably higher than that.

Perhaps will spend some time on phone in morning and see who will do me sensible deal for 2 bridgestones.
