Cooling Fans
« on: 15 June 2011, 10:07:22 »

On my Elite estate 3.0 1999 the cooling fan;  one of 3,  the one on the offside in front of the radiator has decided to run all the time even with the ignition off and key removed. Does anyone know is this normal with a possible thermostat sticking on or should  the ignition shut the fan circuits down. In other words is it a wiring short or device failure?

Even in British Summers most cars are overcooled, can I disconnect this fan for a temporary solution, other questions is there a single fuse that will do this or do I have to get to the wiring?  What controls the fan, if its a thermostat, where is it please the area around the Rad is packed with stuff, its hard to see.

Regards Dave

There's a few (3?) relays in the engine ECU/fuse/relay box that switch the fans on and off, triggered by thermoswitches in the rad.  Most likely one of these relays has welded itself in the 'on' state.

Pull relays one by one until the fan stops, then find a spare to try in that location.

Thanks for info. Is there special way of pulling relays, cos they seem to be very tight and I'm worried about pulling contact pins off?? Is ther a locking mechanism?? Can anyone point me in the direction of a diagram showing relay position??

You should find that both the green ones are a/c related and are just a tight pull fit.

The plastic top can be removed with a thin screw driver or blade...you may find the metal parts have welded themselves together and form a constant circuit.

They are quite a tight fit in the socket though so pull hard.

Thanks for replies. Found the relay location diagram on the forum after trying several searches, it seems to be quite specific on search requests. It happened to be the 4th relay I pulled that stopped the fan, and it was K28 as you bet. I then found the rad sensor which required battery removal to get at it safely, put the relay back and disconnected the sensor reconnected battery, this also stopped the fan. Right, must be rad sensor I says. Reconnected all with battery, fan now stopped. Ran car for an hour or so with and without climate control on cool, no problems. Done 160 miles this evening, with several stops and haven't had a problem, so still don't know if its relay or temperature sensor. At least I know which circuits to check, but unless I replace both devices  I probably won't have a cure. I'm away abroad for a week so I'll have to leave it for the time being. Thanks again for help.

It'll be the relay, I reckon.

The relay can't be powered unless ignition is on whereas the feed it switches is permanently live. I reckon you have unstuck the contacts by wiggling it free of its' socket, but it'll go wrong again sooner or later.
