Xenon Headlights
« on: 18 June 2011, 19:43:18 »

Don't know if I'm wrong or the idiot that's supplied me. Do xenon headlights always have the ballast pack underneath and special plug and bulb??

If it don't have ballast then it's a standard headlight??

HID headlights always have a special bulb.  The ballast pack is screwed to the underside of the headlamp but is removable.
Some conventional bulbs are filled with xenon gas and called xenon bulbs, but they are not HID and do not require a ballast pack.

Elite now gone.  Bought an X-Type 4x4.  If there had been an Omega 4x4 I would have bought that instead.  We really liked the Omega, but I wanted 4x4.

Ballast PAC is not supplied when ordering a new headlight. Your bp will screw on to it. But the hid bulb socket is different from normal H1(?) headlight bulb.

I can see inside that the mechanism is just
Bolted in, however the cover appears to be glued on with mastic or something, is this just a case of running a Stanley blade throughout to remove the lens.

Had anyone done this before??

Well this is a first for me, but I got a tip from a mate who told me to bake the headlight in the oven to soften the mastic and hey presto i was able to remove the lense covers and swap the xenon lights over.

I then put the units back together and put back in oven to melt the mastic together again. I then added a layer of waaterproof glue down the seam to seal the headlight and hey presto I have two working xenons  :y :y

Temp was 100 but it wasn't in there long and kept trying to see how hot lens was. I'm guessing if u left it too long it would just distort and melt!
