If its a V6 then the sensor on the header tank is probably sticking...take the cap off the tank and push the plunger up and down a bit...worst case a new header tank with sensor is only about £40...

Should be topped up with 50/50 Vaux pink antifreeze and water mix

its a 2.2dti,
is there a how to to drain the system or is it just a case of pulling the bottom hose off the rad and letting it drain that way?

If you look underneath the front of the car from just in front of the n/s wheel you will see the bottom of the radiator. There is a drain plug there for draining the system. You will only drain about half the water from the engine.

If you do drain half, you can then fill with water, take it for a spin and then drain again. Do this again a few times and only a small % of the original stuff will remain.

You should also flush/reverse flush the heater matrix whilst you are at it.
