Scraping noise..
« on: 29 June 2011, 09:13:24 »

I have got a scraping noise (sounds like something beng dragged) from the gear box when it is in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th...  In 4th gear it is nice and quiet, but, it is getting me concerned...

Could it be the gearbox oil???  Is it changable on the manual box???

Yes it is.. Nice easy job.. drain plug at the bottom (back edge of the box) and filler/level plug half way up the drivers side. Use genuine VX fully synthetic. not to dear. About £5 a litre. you need 2 bottles, takes about 1 and a half litres. Wear old clothes because it stinks to high heaven. Do a full change rather than a top up, these fliuds dont like being mixed with what ever is in yours.

Hope this helps :y

A bit more on this...

When the car has travelled about 10 miles, the clutch starts to feel very strange (very light, fluid levels fine),  There is a smell almost like gas in the car (it is a diesel engine)..

The noise is very audible outside of the car at times (got some very strange looks)...

I am getting it up on the ramps tomorrow to have proper look to see if there is anything sigs it may be something else...

The scraping is when the car is under load in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th only.  The clutch does not slip...  Any ideas would be very welcome...
