my elite passed MOT relatively simply not so long ago but now engine has given up the ghost had a tow home from a lovely rac man.

anyway on the engine, the head gasket has gone, cambelt needs doing and probably some more. advice please?

forum members who could do/help with the work?

I have a trade club card so can get any parts beforehand if that helps!

really want to drive that 2.5v6elite again, getting bored of a rattly old corsa!

Chin up Dave,

Cambelt easy enough to do with dvd and locking kit.

Is it definitely the head gasket? oil cooler often a favourite. A bit tedious clearing all the gunk out of the cooling system, but alot less work than stripping the heads.

If the heads do have to come off, then why not a mid life overhaul:
3.0 cams, lpg kit, renew all the valve stem seals and any other bits that would be  pain if you didn't already have to dismantle the engine?

Just look at it as an opportunity rather than a problem.

Unfortunately not free this weekend, as have some other commitments pre-planned/coming up - sorry 

That said - we really need to ascertain if it's really head gasket - failures are rare.

What were the symptoms?

thanks for the replies guys and glad you got my PM james. i like the idea of it being an opportunity and a bit more power! . The car may be 12 years old but has only done 83k

The car had a new oil cooler (after oil in water tank) and hbv already (after serious water leak). the symptons were mayo, oil leak for a while (think mostly through rocker covers although timbuk did them too)

final symptons were large amounts of oil dumped, water being used, starting problems, cutting out and finally no firing up at all. rac man used a compression tester and said there wasn't any and coupled with the other diagnosis he was sure it was HG. spark and fuel delivery are fine. There might've been more symptons but not to mind right now.

would that explain the oil/water loss too? i know a HG fail is rare but he did seem to know his stuff.... :-/

A few things to check..

Do you have mayo on your dipstick? or is it just normal oil?
If you remove your reservoir cap from cold then start the car does the water bash out asthough the piston is pushing the water out?
Do you have water firing out of your exhaust?

You need to turn the engine over by hand and line the timing marks up on the cam pulleys to see if any are out of alignment. The belt only needs to slip a tooth for poor running.

Thanks. I'll try and check in daylight. Oh but there's no firing up of any sorts so that may limit me a tad!

Still haven't checked for codes Pete, will get on to that as it's sitting eating tax!

Going to print this page out as well Daz to check your questions, although as the car doesn't start I'm not sure how far I'll get.

I have checked for whether the cam belt's broke tho, and it's not. Those little lobes still move just fine.

Anyhoo, really just need to get on with it so catch you laters potatas!

i know you have other problems but i would really check for codes, sneaky suspension that cranksensor might be goosed causing the non starting
