Need some pointers
« on: 05 August 2011, 16:00:53 »

Hi every1
Awesome to be here amongst fellow Omega enthusiasts. I haven't formally introduced myself yet in the new-comers section yet so I'll do it here if you don't mind & then later over there.
I'm Anthony, living in Madrid (originally from Manchester) and my last set of Wheels was a "97 Burgandy Omega 2.2". But I had to let her go in back in 2004 because of a move to Hong Kong. (sad day)
I've not really needed a car since then but now me and the Mrs want to get pregnant and we also live near the mountains north of Madrid so in winter it's cry cold for a pregnant lady and so I decided to buy a car.... Guess which kind? Yup another Mig!!!!
After searching here in sunny España I have finally found the one I want (albeit) a little sporty however it's the favourite at the moment. It's a lead grey Sport edition 3.2  2002 V6 Automatic with 127,000 KMS on the clock and black  sports leather interior with 17" alloys.

I've spoken to the showroom many times and made a few offers and finally got it down to 3200 Euros.

Next week I'm going to see the car and give it a going over. My question is this....
For a car like this what should I be looking for regarding defects and flaws.

I don't mind spending a lot of time looking it over and hopefully a mechanic friend of mine will be coming with me too.
Ps the car has had new air/oil filters/tyres, gearbox valves? Full service and passed an MOT.
Your help and pointers will be really appreciated.
Many thanks

Anthony ;)

The cambelt and tensioners must be replaced every 40k miles (70k km??) so its pretty much due one soon...might be a bargaining point for an extra few hundred off the price if they don't have proof of it being changed recently...

Also any knocks or rattles from the suspension...

Check there is no oil in the spark plug wells...this is a sure fire sign that the cam covers are leaking...and the breather system is blocked...

Hi guys
You can see the car here:

Cheers
Anthony

Looks a nice car, colour screen (CID) too  :y the plenum has been off at least once - all the caps are missing.  :(
What MutantCav say and look for uneven tyre wear ie scrubbed inner edges of tyres which could be worn wishbone bushes. In sunny Madrid you're going to want the a/c working as it should. They're pretty bullet proof engine wise if looked after, there are planty here with 150k to 250k miles on the clock and still going strong.
Look for signs of oil in the header tank which is likely to be a failed oil cooler.

That looks Ok. Prices up North are a damn sight more reasonable than down South.

Check the EML (engine management light) comes on on start up and then goes off. Unscrupulous dealers remove the bulb rather than fix the problem as I found to my cost on my "low mileage Network Q car"

Mine needed new wishbones and I gave up in the end as couldn't find anywhere here that would set the geometry up after properly. Too much expense and hassle to drive back to WIM in England. OK if you travel back for other reasons.

You will have tax and transfer fees on top of that , so maybe another 500 euros. use a gestor (35 euros?) he will make sure no loans, unpaid car circulation tax etc etc

Good luck :y

Thanks for the message....What do you mean by the highlighted text? ......

The big silver/grey bit on top of the engine is the plenum chamber. The four bolts on top should have a black cover on them which suggests the bolts have been removed but the covers have been lost/not replaced.  ;) ;) ;) It doesn't affect the way the car runs, but does say that someone has at least done some work on the car.  :y
