HELP!!!! COOLANT LEVEL LEAKING FORM HEAT EXCHANGER
« on: 22 August 2011, 13:41:51 »

Gents,

My Omega has a coolant leaking problem, amongst other things, we have narrowed this down to a leaking heat exchanger.
Got the engine bay car steam cleaned and whilst under could see where it had started to corrode and leaking from.

Vauxhall dealer quoting about £300 for the part.

Now i read somewhere on some other forums, that vauxhall had replaced this unit as it is common for these things to leak.

The new part is a stainless steel version part no. 13101668, ive done some queries on this at dealers and autovaux, but no conclusive view.

dealer says yes it fine new part will fit, autovaux say its for a 2.6 v6 different part completely and will not work.

can get one for £55 scrappie but not sure this will work....

any suggesstions or help guys my beloved omega is just sitting in driveway.

cheers

sam :D

I think when you say "Heat Exchanger" you mean Oil Cooler going by that part number?

Do you have oil in the coolant?

hey dude, yes i believe it is the part that holds the oil filter, its a cylinder shape cap with two pipes going out of it.

im told that this cools the oil down......

i need some recommendations, to seal this leak, either new part or some sort of sealant??

any ideas mate?

Right ignore my previous post, that was specific to the V6 engine. I assume as per your profile you have a 2.2 petrol?

The oil filter (which just keeps oil clean and filters out crud) is what you are describing. Its at the front of the engine down low on the drivers side, (assuming you are in the UK?) This does not cool the oil....

What exactly have Vauxall quoted you for?

I get it dude.

The oil filter fits into a cap, the cap has 2 pipes going out of it.
the oil passes throught this system and the oil filter cleans the oil, while it passes through this unit the coolant cools the oil down.

dealers have said that this heat exchanger is prone to leaks and a replacement of this heat exchanger is about £300.

the item u describe is exactly there, drive side lower end.

The heat exchanger is leaking coolant from the rear, dripping down the oil filter and gathering on the floor . leak not in the oil filter itself......

need a fix or new exchanger??? but unclear about this new stainless steel part replacement thing??????

any views anyone

What you describe there is an Oil Cooler, but this is for the V6 engine only. It sits in the valley of the V and as you describe has two pipes at each end, its sitting in coolant which cools the oil.

A 4 cylinder 2.2 petrol engine does not have this.

What engine do you have in your car?  :-/

Correct, but the 2.2 has a heat exchanger on top of the oil filter housing sandwiched between the filter housing and the oil pump  :y

Must be it then  :y

Sam if you get a Trade Club Card, you can get the part at trade prices and fit if you can DIY.

I never heard of a 2.2 having issues here though, both mine and fatherT's 2.2 are high milers now, show no issues around that area  :-/

Doesn't that bit sit below the water pump, surely more likely to be that leaking than the oil cooler, i've never heard of one of those leaking...
