2.6 V6 Oil Filter. Am I doing something wrong?
« on: 05 September 2011, 19:25:53 »

The only access I can get is from under the car and with the steering pointing to the right to get some leverage on my ratchet.

The filter was extremely tight to start getting it undone to start with and I can only get two clicks on the ratchet per turn in the confined space.

Trouble is, I've been turning and turning and the filter housing does not seem to be getting any looser, turning anti clockwise. Am I doing something wrong?

Sounds like someone had done it up with a windy gun.
The usual solution is to hold the housing with a strap wrench or even a chain wrench filter tool whilst you unscrew the cap. I ended up using a 3 foot piece of scaff bar on mine the first time I removed it, luckily it was over a pit at the time.
When you get it off you'll see the bolt you need to re tighten to hold it to the block and only do the cap up to the torque stamped on the top (think it's 15Nm).

Yes!!

The whole housing is turning. My next question was going to be should the whole unit turn or just the top bit.

I dont have a pit or enough room to strap the housing and turn the top part.

Is it safe to refill with oil as it is?

They are a pain in the arse - you can change them over to the normal type of filter - you just need the threaded inner part available from vauxhall

Managed to tighten it alright. Will put the oil in and test for leaks.

Good thing I was intending to do an oil change and then another soon after. Looks like I'll have to get VX to do the next one and hope they will use the filter I have to change that as well................with instructions to tighten the filter housing so I can remove it next time!

when people over tighten the cap, they can be a nightmare to remove. The cap (part which you put your 24mm spanner on) comes off leaving the housing attached to the block. I have had a break a few as they would not come off whatever I tried. I have broken one today on a Signam which I will replace with the cannister filter and convertion stud, this costs less than £25 opposed to £65 ish for the one thats on now.

Hope that makes sense

Yep, makes perfect sense. If I was to remove the housing myself, how would I break it off?

Edited to change word.

when they first introduced that housing the cap had a 3/8 sq drive slot in the middle of the 24mm nut - if it was overtightened above the 15NM and someone used the 3/8 drive it cracked the cap - so on later caps the 3/8 sq drive was removed  :)
