My flexi joint gone too?
« on: 13 September 2011, 21:26:00 »

Having seen another post on here about a failed flexi joint on the exhaust pipe, I had a look at mine. The metal braid is all broken on mine, but the pipe does not seem to be leaking.
Will this pass an MOT?, or is it cream crackered and I am living on borrowed time?
I must say I do not know what role the braiding plays on these, does it help hold the joint together at all?
Also seen adverts for non welded clamped types of flexi joint.
Does any one know which to use?
Cheers all.

The braiding does hold it all together, because of the engine movement created by inline 4's it needs the flexi to remove vibration in the exhaust system. V6's are smoother and don't need it.

As long as its not blowing (put your hand around the flexi) if no exhaust gas is escaping, it will pass.

May get an advisory if its badly corroded / about to fail though.

Relax, you'll hear it well enough if the actual flexi starts to break.

I'd guess that the overbraid bit is mainly to keep stones out from between the convolutions of the actual flex-joint.
