Sat Nav Query
« on: 21 November 2010, 16:40:09 »

I have just read somewhere that allegedly you can buy an upgrade CD for the Sat Nav system in a 99 'T' mini facelift Omega Elite that means that you are able to enter a postcode (luxury!) that transforms it from a nigh on useless system to something usable - is this true? Any information on this may save me buying a Tom Tom.
Thanks in advance!

No, that unit does not support (full) postcode entry.

Not sure how a postcode entry transforms it from uselss to usable? Is it that hard to whack in a town and street?

Maybe I have failed to get this gist of it - mine won't seem to let me just put in a town and a street, it continually asks me for a town, a street, and another street that it intersects. I don't necessarily know another street that the one I want intersects with and if I guess (it gives me options) if it is a long road I could be taken miles from where I want to be........
Am I doing something wrong?
I would be happy if I could just put in a town to get me very close to where I want to be....
When I say useless I would rather beg my girlf to borrow her tom tom and go to the aggravation of getting it out of her car rather than spending 5 minutes trying to programme it with the fiddly twiddy selector and then not get to where I want to go.
But if I could just put in either postcode, or town and a single road name, I'd be in business!!
It also says 'you are leaving the digitized area' or something very similar on a regular basis- do I need to update the disc (I imagine it is the same one that came with it in 1999 - the previous owner hardly used it....) and where would I get one from if so?
Thanks for all advice in advance!

later versions do allow partialpostcode entry ie AB12  3 but I find it's still better to put the town & then the street. You don't have to put the intersection, just click on 'quit' and it'll find the requested street. Obviously, roads that are major thoroughfares, and are miles long, can pose a problem compared to TomTom that'll take you to a house number .... ish

Yes! - Takes ages to input it on those old skool Sat Navs, usually when I come to use sat nav of any description there is no street address, sods law  :(

I use Tommy Tom up and down the length of the country quite regularly.

Postcode entry is an advantage but it does have its limitations as postcodes cover an area sometimes, rather than a specific street.  Try going rural rather than inner city....

Exactly like the crappy TomTom and similar units, the CARiN will prompt for an intersection if the digital map does not have road numbers for that street.

The issue with the CARiN unit fitted to early Omegas is its age - the last map made was 2007/2008, and with the later maps, its slloooowwww to enter an address and calc initial route (once route calculated, its fabulous, including recalculations).

My TomTom unit finally died when it screwed me over several times around central Birmingham, as it couldn't get a GPS signal. Fortunately, I remembered to open the window first.

I only ever use the NCDx in my 2 Omegas now - similar feature set to the CARiN, but faster, and current maps available (for now).

Don't get me wrong, portable units like TomTom have their uses, but quite simply aren't a patch on (even old) car based systems.  And thats before I get onto my rant about how drivers sticking gonks on their windscreens should be banned from driving. Its worth £50 to have it on the phone for when I'm in someone else's car, or on the bike.

Still thinking of upgrading to CID :-/ ::)

Need a new Exhaust too and I understand Tunnie is quite good at fitting them ::) :D So was thinking it's either full SS system (including replacing the cats) or Eternal system and NCDx and CID

Oh... And need to fit a HF kit if replacing the stereo, which I understand you're the master at knocking up a loom for ;) (I have the correct telemute lead somewhere with the correct resistance for the speakers)
