Is there not a local company who could re-condition one of yours?

Not really thought of that one tbh, figured it'll still be expensive, because surely taking your alternator for a re-con is not going to be any more parts or labour efficient than giving them one to recondition for the next person? i'm still only getting a reconditioned unit.

or are there big savings to be had? its not really an area i've looked into much ::)

Years ago after part x'ing my alternator for a re-con unit  and being sold a re-painted pup, I would now always go for having my current unit fixed. But you need a proper auto spark and not somewhere like Halfords.

LOL halfords??? behave!!!!

hmm bit of a trek, im near cambridge

If you go down the refurb route, Panks in Norwich are very highly recommended.
A mate of mine is the senior mech at one of the boatyards up that way, and he swears by them. :y

Nice one,  :y ill find a contact no., unless anyone knows anywhere nearer? thats a good hour or two from mine...

right i have been to a local auto electrician whom which i was recommended by our works' mechanic. They called back reckon its well buggered  :-? and quoted for a new one. 162 notes  >:(

anyhows, back on the search for a cheaper option. looking for a second hand one off a broken car and cheaper new prices, and found the following;

ftp://http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-ALTERNATOR-VAUXHALL-Omega-2-5-TD-94-99-/250632945762?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a5ae34062#ht_2247wt_905

are these worth bothering with or is it a typical example of cheap and nasty???

it claims a 2year/24k mileage warranty so surely it'll do??

I just replaced mine at christmas I think it was £134 with a £36 surcharge.
When I got the old one off the bearings were shot about 1/16 play in them
