« on: 07 May 2011, 13:16:19 »

hi
a mate of mine (drives a 2.5 petrol cdx manual) broke down the other day AA advised him that fuel pump is fubared  :(  is there anything else worth checking before we start stripping the fuel pump out ? and also are fuel pumps car related i.e a 2.5 in a 2.5 a 3.0 in a 3.0 etc? and the big question are they easy to do  ;)

Easy to change but normally fairly reliable.

Have you done a paperclip test before doing anything else? Wouldn't be surprised if a code 19 popped up and it just needs a new Crank Sensor ;)

Yep, unlike many cars the fuel pump doesn't prime until the crank sensor detects activity, so often misdiagnosed.

You can always bridge the contacts on the fuel pump relay to check if the pump runs.

If you look in the engine bay fuse box, there are two purple relays right at the back. Fuel pump relay is the purple one closest to the wing.

If you remove it, you will see two of the blades are thicker than the other two. The thicker pair are the pair that need to be shorted.

Alternatively, take the lid off the relay and press the contacts closed.
