smoke form drivers side of engine
« on: 28 October 2011, 13:59:45 »

hi can anyone help me, i own an omega elite 3.0l have had it for about 6 weeks. I do about 70o miles a week on the m25 / 26 and of late have 2 problems.
1) the engine light comes on when sitting at around 70 if i speed up it goes out but then comes back on again. it pretty much inconsistant no pattern to the problem, comes on a lot at low revs although the car runs like a dream.
2) the second problem is that when the tempreture is up 90+ or i am sitting in traffic there is a cloud of white smoke from the drivers side of the engine and a smell of burning oil. I can not see and leaks !!!

Also does anyone know someone or somewhere near gillingham kent that can service and maintain as i love this car its by far the best drive i have ever had around the M25.

Thanks
Brett

Welcome to the forum, Brett. :y

Regarding problem 1, you need to read the fault codes from the engine ECU. Here's a guide to help: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90581.0. See if you can paperclip test it and count the flashes, then post back with the codes.

Problem 2 is almost certainly down to leaking cam cover gaskets. These are not easy to spot from above but a very common failure. They can also cause oil to leak into the spark plug wells which eventually breaks down the insulation on the plug leads and causes a misfire. This might explain problem 1.

There is a guide on cam cover gasket replacement here: http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=90542.0. Be sure the clean the breathers while you're at it, and we've found that only genuine GM gaskets tend to last.

Thank you for the welcome and indeed the help I will give the paper clip test a go, as for the cam cover gasket I am not the most technical of people to say the least so i will have to find someone local to take that on but many thanks indeed.

Welcome Brett!

Also, when sorting the cam covers out, make sure you ONLY get genuine Vx parts as thrid party parts don't last 2 minutes and you'll be doing all over again before you know it.

Also, check to see if there are any other OOFer's bear you able to help/guide you  ;)

Don't let your local garage offer to do the whole thing cheaper for you by using pattern gaskets, as said above, they'll leak. Have a look in the guide, you might find that you think you could do it yourself, it's not difficult. Or maybe one of the mobile lads here could do it for you, that way you'd know it was done correctly.  :y :y :y
