For those of you who have Home Insurance with Family Legal cover Extension (usually about £18 a year) I had a bit of a shock when checking my mother in laws policy. She is in hospital with second instance of NHS medical negligence and so I decided to check whether she was covered for us to take legal action under the legal expenses section of policy.
She took out home cover with the Post Office - this is the biggest pile of S**t I have seen for some time. There are lines and lines of small print exclusions and of course Medical Neglignce is excluded. I checked with my home insurer - Direct Line and medical negligence cover is INCLUDED. Checked with Post office who confirmed no cover - but they suggested I could go "contingency fee" privately - which is not the point.
Post Office are obviously allowing their name to be used by a panel of insurers to offer useless restricted cover - I ask you - for Family Legal one of the most likely things you will come across in life for which you need cover is an NHS cock up. This should be highlighted.
Maybe worth checking your policies and just seeing if other insurers cover this risk. Post Office offered refund of £18 but told them to stick it - my suggestion that their product design people ring me to get some advice on this was turned down - surprisingly.
Maybe Ombudsman or Watchdog territory
