I have bought a 2000 reg omega 3.0 v6 mv6 and it broke down on me today the rac man says its my cam belt tensioner, if it is what do i need to buy and will it have damaged the engine in anyway?

If the tensioner has failed, allowing the belt to slip then its bad news. If its slipped more than 2 or 3 teeth your valves will be bent! - Resulting in full top end rebuild required 

If you just bought it, i'd be asking for a refund!

Hmm. I would take his diagnosis with a pinch of salt, TBH.

What were the symptoms when it broke down and what did the RAC guy check?

They have cam sensors, but they will do jack-all when the tensioner to the belt fails 

As Kevin says, trust the RAC man as you would a politician!

If he is correct you will almost certainly have many bent valves.a good second hand pair of heads and a cambelt/tensioner kit plus gaskets etc. will be needed.

Started typing reply,got interrupted - posted reply, now obselete.
If I were you I would get someone who knows what they are doing to have a look behind the cambelt cover, and then go from there.
Dont try  to turn the engine over until the problem is diagnosed properly.Could be something as simple as a crank sensor.

my symptoms where was driving along and heard a rattle from engine started to slow down and pull to the side of the road and it just cut out on me with engine management light on. The rescue guy looked under the cover asked me to turn it over and said everything still moving but belt flapping.

If he meant the cambelt, you`ve almost certainly done damage. Do not under any circumstances attempt to turn the engine over until as said previously, a diagnosis has been performed

Sounds like his diagnosis was correct,but worth having it checked.I dont think he should have asked you to turn the engine over though,as it may well have made a bad situation worse.

Might be worth stripping down so you can see the Cambelt (the one you can see is the Auxbelt) then turning the car over by hand, to see if the timing is still ok or what has happened.
You should be able to turn the car over by hand, you should feel compression, but if it is solid at any part of this process don't carry on trying to turn it over... as you could (not saying you have) have a bent valve or two

Sounds more like aux belt ? Altho' that wouldn't explain engine cutting out and eml on

it was the r A C that killed my 2 ltr i told them the water pump had gone and he started the engine never trust rac again

Just for my two-penneth....I doubt aux belt....mine went (tensioner melted) but the car was driveable, albeit just to get somwehere safe because of overheating.
I have had two cambelt snappings on my other cars, and your symptons match exactly
