So there I was happily driving along on Thursday when the engine suddenly seemed to be bouncing up and down the revs all by itself!! Like it was trying to find a gear.

I nursed it home jacked it up and it seemed a little low on gearbox oil (don't worry I checked the level with the engine running), so I topped it up.

Took it out for a drive and it decided it would dump all of the oil out through the breather pipe!!

I left it in with a guy I know who fixes Vauxhalls and he threw a replacement auto box in for £300 including fitting and she seems to be as ggod as new!

ANyone else have a similar problem?

A lot of similar experiences posted on here in past - usual format is ATF change/top up, possible crank sensor, possible solenoid etc but you have got yours sorted for not too much money. Warning though - sometimes after this type of problem has occurred it may then not reappear for ages. At least if you get a repeat then it maybe crank sensor.

You have got me intrigued, why would the crank sensor cause the box to spit out its oil?

I was referring to the first problem of an apparent neutral position/ no gear selected which can be as a result of engine speed /autobox miscommunication - and which can of course be the crank sensor.

300 notes is reasonable enough for a gearbox fitted for you
