Just received a new one and told to discard my original one. apparently they have had a theft of log books from the dvlc and changed the colour now to prevent fraud. anyone else had this??

im still waiting for my logbook to arrive 3 months after buying my car, ring dvla and all you get is a automated machine to enquire about it

Yes all 3 of my cars have had the log books changed to the new style ones - and quite a few people at work have had them too.

Well you say that Richie, but what kind of security measures do they have for it to happen anyway?  It isn't the first time that they have had thefts of log books, goes on more than you would think  .  It doesn't always get to be public knowedge though 

I believe they've been forced to change the V5 quite abit as a fair few of the V5's have been taken, hence why a panic and big change.

If you can't be bothered to google or search for why, here's an extract below of part of a report


"The identities of thousands of vehicles have been stolen over the past two years using blank registration documents taken from the DVLA.

Police are recovering around ten faked log books a week but up to 130,000 blank books, stolen in 2006, are still missing.

According to the Association of Chief Police Officers 11,000 vehicles worth more than £13million have been cloned by criminals so that stolen cars can then be sold on as legitimate.

ACPO's vehicle crime intelligence service, told BBC radio: 'We are working closely with the DVLA to investigate the theft of a large number of vehicle registration documents.

'Around 11,000 vehicles, worth over £13million are estimated to have had their identities stolen over the past two-and-a-half years as a result, with innocent motorists the victims.

'There are some simple ways in which the public can protect themselves and we urge that every care is taken.'

The DVLA has published a list of serial numbers for the stolen log books on its website.

A spokesman said: 'We have done everything we can to quickly alert the public to the theft of these blank registration certificates and continue to work with the police."


Anyone bought a car lately, you may want to double check you have the genuine one!

Richie, I Heard it was something  to do with the scrapping section of the old  logbook.

Some people were saying that their vehicle had been scrapped but were in fact keeping them & therefore not having to SORN them.

 Have a a look to see if that scrappage  bit has been done away with on the new logbook.  Think you will find it has

Yup, no longer a box to tick saying "This vehicle has been scrapped" - your only option is now to deliver the chassis complete with VIN and V5 to an "authorised vehicle dismantler" (and then hope that he remembers to send off the V5, or you'll get chased for fines every time it's tax/SORN date rolls around!)

Its no different than the amount of  dodgy passports that these people get hold of. how are they being stolen

I have had a new V5 for the BMW, not yet for the Omega. The reason was the same as given to you, Richie.

Hmm, quite impressive, it's only taken them five years. I can see why they are streamlining with that sort of efficiency.
